November 2023 marks a year since the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Ethiopian government signed a peace agreement that ended two years of armed conflict in northern Ethiopia. Armed clashes between the two parties began on 3 November 2020 after TPLF-affiliated forces — Tigray regional special forces and Tigray militias — attacked the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) north command post in Tigray. Since then, the conflict has passed through various stages, affecting Afar, Amhara, and Tigray regions until 2 November 2022, when the federal government and the TPLF signed the Agreement for Lasting Peace through a Permanent Cessation of Hostilities. While this peace agreement managed to stop the fighting in Tigray region, violent conflict has continued in various locations in Ethiopia. The infographic below shows political violence trends in Ethiopia from 3 November 2022 to 2 November 2023.
